Ellen DeGeneres gives single mum $10k reward for her act of kindness

A 21-year-old single mum who paid the lunch bill of two soldiers dining in the restaurant where she works has been rewarded for her kindness by chat show host Ellen DeGeneres – to the tune of $10,000.

According to Fox News, Sarah Hoidahl was waitressing in the Concord, New Hampshire restaurant when she overheard two female soldiers saying they were not getting paid because of the US government shutdown.

When the women had finished eating, Sarah left them a note instead of the bill. It said: “Thanks to the government shutdown the people like you that protect this country are not getting paid, however I still am. Lunch is on me thank you for serving ladies! Have a good day!”

The young mum then paid for their $27.75 meal out of her own pocket.

Sky News reports that Ellen got to hear about Sarah’s act of kindness when the New Hampshire National Guard soldiers posted about it on their Facebook page.

The star invited Sarah on to her show and gave her back the $27.75 in cash – along with a cheque for $10,000 and a 50-inch television.

Overwhelmed Sarah buried her face in her hands as Ellen told her ‘You’re a good person’.
