Single parents are more stressed than couples…

Hold on to your hats – a study has found that single parents are more stressed than couples!

This earth-shattering news comes via the Irish Examiner  who report that a newly published study of Irish babies (the ‘Growing Up in Ireland’ longitudinal study) revealed higher levels of stress in lone parent families.

Dr Elizabeth Nixon, who authored the report, told the paper her researchers found ‘slightly higher levels of parental stress in those single-parent families’.

She added that it was ‘possible that over time, the elevated levels of stress that single parents experience may impact upon their parenting and then, in turn, on their infant’s development – but we’re not observing that at this point’.

The Irish Times also covered the research, reporting additionally that stressed parents and parents who work were found  to be ‘less sensitive’, but that ‘being a single parent has no impact on mothers’ sensitivity’.
